October Is Family History Month: How Will You Celebrate?

Ancestry.com: "'The concept of designating October as 'Family History Month' began several years ago. It originated with the Monmouth County Genealogical Society, whose aspiration was that during this month, societies would do something special to draw attention to and promote family history. Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia all passed 'proclamations' in the last few years declaring October as Family History Month. At the last NGS board meeting, the NGS board officially endorsed the concept and will use the NGS Newsmagazine to promote the idea.'"

Metropolitan Police Service - Fraud Alert

Metropolitan Police Service - Fraud Alert

E-mails are created purporting to come from bank security departments were being circulated asking for username and password details in connection with Internet banking. The email invited account holders to click on a URL (Uniform Resource Locator), which generates a web page. Unsuspecting account holders account holders completed their user name and password on the web page. Unknowingly the account holder had linked into a web server run by a criminal enterprise.

Once the user name and password have been obtained the criminal logs into the on line banking system of that account and transfers money from that account into another account from which he will be able to obtain the funds.

In order to facilitate the transfers a number of people are recruited who have accounts at the same bank as the target account. The recruitment involves advertisements on Internet forums and unsolicited emails offering jobs as ‘ money processors'. Respondents to the advertisements are in receipt of 7% commission of the monies that they handle.

Once the stolen funds were received into the money processors bank account, they were given instructions to withdraw the money in cash and then to use money transfer agents and send the money to criminal organisers.

Global Gene Project to Trace Humanity's Migrations

Global Gene Project to Trace Humanity's Migrations
and the National Geographic Online site is working again

Lesson Plans - Genographic: Permanent Markers

National Geographic Channel: Explorer: Explorer: Search for Adam

Genographic is not really a genetics project. It is using genetics as a tool to study history and anthropology. I’m interested in the impact of the Inca empire on the genetic patterns in upper Amazonia, in Central Asia I want to look at the impact of Alexander the Great,” says Wells as he rattles of a hit list of historical mysteries that he hopes to solve.

Search for Adam

On TV just now

Haplogroup B is one of the oldest Y-chromosome lineages in humans. Haplogroup B is found exclusively in Africa. This lineage was the first to disperse around Africa. There is current archaeological evidence supporting a major population expansion in Africa

Y-Chromosome Biallelic Haplogroups

Biallelic SNP markers are single base-pair mutations (polymorphisms) that occur at different Y-chromosome locations about once every 7000 years. SNP=Single Nucleotide Polymorphism. There are 153 known haplogroups. Haplotypes defined by the 25 STR markers are subgroups under the haplogroups

Haplogroups I, I1, and I1a are nearly completely restricted to northwestern Europe. These would most likely have been common within Viking populations. One lineage of this group extends down into central Europe.

National Geographic Channel: Explorer: Explorer: Search for Adam: "Analyzing DNA from the cheek cells of a group of Mongolians enabled geneticist Spencer Wells, an Explorer-In-Residence at the National Geographic Society, to figure out whether they were indeed descendants of the notorious warrior who lived 800 years ago and thousands of miles away. Such exotic historical enigmas are daily fodder for Wells who is in the midst of the Genographic Project (GP)a massive undertaking to sample human DNA from around the world to illuminate human genetic and migratory history.

There is a history book in your DNA [that reveals] how people are related to each other all over the planet and how we have moved around, says Wells.
The last 10,000 years are of particular interest to Wells who, since childhood, wanted to be an historian. I was fascinated by Egypt and Greece and Rome and all of these great empires and Im very interested in the impact of these empires on the patterns of genetic variationfor example, can we see traces of the Phoenicians in North Africa? says Wells.

His latest adventures have led him to discover that Thomas Jeffersons ethnic background is not quite as one would expect. He has hunted down possible descendents of Solomon, the third king of Israel. And, he has entered a world where science and religion convergethe search for what he calls the scientific Adam, the man who gave rise to all men today and the trunk of the human family tree. Wells has used DNA to trace this common ancestor back to Africa and perhaps to the very plains where he may have hunted. He has even identified a living tribe with an ancient lineage that offers a window into the life of scientific "

Google Print program sues - Google Search

The Other Shoe Drops: Google Print Sued for Copyright Violation: "Rather than duplicate Subers work, let me merely add what information I gathered while following this story. According to Fred von Lohmann, senior intellectual property lawyer for the Electronic Frontier Foundation and a Google Print proponent, the defense by Google will turn to a 2003 case entitled Kelly v. Arriba Soft Corp. In this case, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal found in favor of a search engine that copied images from a photographer but displayed them only in thumbnail form. The decision held that the commercial purpose of copying the material was not exploitative and constituted fair use. Google Prints displays of snippets of text from full-text copies of books, according to von Lohmann, would seem similar.
However, another legal expert advised me that the Kelly v. Arriba Soft Corp. case holds as mandatory precedent only within the Ninth Circuits jurisdiction, rather than nationally as do cases decided by the Supreme Court. The appellate court with the largest body of intellectual property cases and the highest reputation in that area is the Second Circuit Court of Appeal, which is the jurisdiction to which the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York belongs. In fact, among the cases citing Kelly v. Arriba Soft Corp., the only one citing it with disfavor was from New York, the jurisdiction in which the Authors Guild suit is filed. Ultimately, however, both legal advisors with whom I spoke assured me that any case that elicits split rulings from these appellate courts would virtually assure an appearance before the Supreme Court. Kermit the Frog 50th showbiz birthday on Friday

Entertainment News:
"Kermit made his debut in a 1955 television comedy called Sam and Friends, which aired locally in Washington, but he looked more lizardlike then. Kermit was fashioned from an old coat belonging to the mother of late Muppets creator Jim Henson and was named after one of Henson's childhood friends.
Henson and his two-foot tall puppet joined Sesame Street in 1969. The Muppet Show followed in 1976 and ended its run in 1982.
Henson gave Kermit a voice and a life for 35 years, until his death in 1990. Since then, Steve Whitmire, who had worked with Henson for about 13 years, has taken over his voice and movements."

Good luck Denmark

The seventh generation heir to the throne was born about 5 hours ago.

The China Post:

"Denmark's Crown Princess Mary gave birth early Saturday to a boy who is second in line to the throne of Europe's oldest reigning monarchy, the royal palace said.

Australian-born Mary gave birth to the boy at 1:57 a.m. Saturday (2357 GMT Friday) at the Copenhagen University Hospital, two weeks before her scheduled due date, the palace said. Both mother and child were doing fine, it said.

The boy was 51 centimeters (20 inches) and weighed 3.5 kilograms (7.7 pounds), Hofchef court chamberlain Per Thornit, head of Crown Prince Frederik's court, said in the statement. Deres Kongelige Højheder Kronprinsparrets Hofstat

His name is likely to be Christian. Since Christian II, who died in 1559, Danish kings have alternately carried the name Christian or Frederik.

Mary Donaldson, 33, who was born in Hobart, on the island of Tasmania, married Crown Prince Frederik, Queen Margrethe's eldest son, in a lavish ceremony in May 2004 at Copenhagen's Lutheran Cathedral. The couple met in a bar during the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Frederik, 37, is next in line to the throne.

Like its Scandinavian neighbors Norway and Sweden, Denmark is a constitutional monarchy where the royals have only ceremonial functions.

In line with a Danish tradition to mark a royal birth, 21 gun shots will be fired at noon (1000 GMT) Saturday from batteries in Copenhagen and from the Kronborg Castle, north of the capital. In the evening, the Danish Home Guard will light some 350 bonfires across the country. "

ALONG THOSE LINES . . .
"LOCATING LOCAL AND FAMILY HISTORIES ONLINE"
by George G. Morgan

I had the pleasure in May of this year of leading a genealogical research tour to England. It was sponsored by the Iowa Genealogical Society and, while we were in London, we had the opportunity to visit and conduct genealogical research in some of the great repositories of the world. Not the least of these was the Society of Genealogists (SoG). The genealogical materials they hold are the largest collection of its type in England, if not in all of Europe. When I was there, I spent a lot of time working with manuscripts and card files, a short time looking into published family histories.

At the time we were there, the prototype of their online catalog, SOGCAT, was accessible in the SoG building. Since that time, it has been made available to the general public at their Web site (http://www.sog.org.uk). This is an exciting development because it gives access to their holdings.

Since my time with the SoG's local and family histories collection was so limited, I only had the opportunity to research and photocopy a limited number of pages in a few books. Now that I have had a few extra hours to spend with my research, I decided to get into SOGCAT and see what published books are there. I identified several books about my BALL family history and then began to wonder how I could gain access to them. I certainly considered working with my public library to determine what libraries might have copies and then make an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) request for a copy of the index, followed by another ILL request for copies of actual pages from the books that interested me. I also considered the possibility of using online used booksellers to locate copies of the books to purchase, but that could be an expensive proposition.

I decided that, before I did all that work, I would see if there were copies of any of the books I sought were accessible in digitized format online. Once again, the
Ancestry.com - Genealogy and Family History Records site came through for me. In "Along Those Lines . . ." this week, let me explain the process I used, and perhaps it will inspire you to do similar research.

IDENTIFYING THE BOOKS
I visited the SoG Web site and went into the SOGCAT. I wanted to look for my BALL ancestors and family. I figured the surname might be in the titles of a number of books but thought that a subject search might yield more items. I therefore selected "Look For SU" (Subject) and entered ball family. At the top of the search results list was "Ball (surname)" and a notation and option to "Search Also Under: Balls (surname)." I clicked on the link to "Ball (surname) and was rewarded with nineteen titles. Some are books, others are typescripts (including newsletters), and there are references to periodical reprints.

In SOGCAT\'s search results, to the left of each entry is a little box. Click the box next to each one you are interested in and then, at the top or bottom of the page, click on the View button. You can the see each item you checked, record by record, examine more details about the item, and then either print or e-mail the entire list to yourself.

I e-mailed my list of three books to myself and the list appeared in my mailbox almost immediately. Wow! I opened the e-mail, printed it, and then began my search for the following three books.

1. Ball Family Records: Genealogical Memoirs of some Ball Families of Great Britain, Ireland & America
Author Wright, William Ball

2. Colonel William Ball Of Virginia, The Great-Grandfather Of Washington
Author Heck, Earl L. W.

3. Virginia Genealogies; A Genealogy of the Glassell family of Scotland & Virginia, also of the families of Ball, Brown, Bryan, Conway, Daniel, Ewell, Holladay, Lewis, Littlepage, Moncure, Peyton, Robinson, Scott, Taylor, Wallace & others, of Virginia & Maryland

I decided that, before I did all that work, I would see if there were copies of any of the books I sought were accessible in digitized format online. Once again, the Ancestry.com site came through for me. In "Along Those Lines . . ." this week, let me explain the process I used, and perhaps it will inspire you to do similar research.

FAMILY AND LOCAL HISTORIES AT Ancestry.com - Search Family & Local Historiesis one of the premium subscription databases. Within this collection, I have found digitized books that are not available in my local public library\'s rather sizeable genealogical collection. Once you identify a book in the collection, you can click on the link to display a search template and a full table of contents. The search template allows you to search within that book (title) only or among all the Family and Local Histories collection.

Of the three titles I had identified in SOGCAT, I found William Ball Wright\'s book (#1) and Horace Edwin Hayden\'s book (#3). While I did not find book #2, I did find several other BALL genealogies, including two whose contents added to my knowledge of some of my direct ancestors.

1. Edward Ball and Some of His Descendants, by Nicholas Ball

2. The Ball family of Southwest Virginia: a genealogy of some of the descendants of Moses Ball of Fairfax County, by Palmer Ray Ball

Ancestry.com\'s images allow me to zoom in and out of the document, change the resolution for faster loading, scroll from page to page, and print, save, and/or e-mail the material.

Since I had not found the second book in Ancestry.com\'s collection, I returned to the search template and entered the first name of William, the surname of Ball, and a keyword of Colonel, hoping to narrow the search a bit. The search results were even more encouraging than I had hoped! The two books I\'d already found were included, but there were ninety-six other search results.
Author Hayden, Horace Edwin

The search results were even more encouraging than I had hoped! The two books I'd already found were included, but there were ninety-six other search results.

The first one in the list is a 1941 book titled "A Few Early Families of America," by Johnson Albert. When I clicked on the link, I was taken to page 136 where William Ball (Colonel) is listed as the father of one Joseph Ball. A drop-down box at the top of the screen labeled "Go to section:" allows me to move around the rest of the sections of this book, including the table of contents and the index.

In the index I could look at all the Ball family members included in the book. Based on the page number listed for William Ball, I returned to the top of the screen and entered page number 135 as cited in the index. That page was displayed and, sure enough, there was Col. William Ball. (My exact search using the keyword of \'Colonel\' had excluded this page because his military rank was abbreviated. This taught me another lesson about entering too narrow a search.)

MAKING THE CONNECTION WITH THE BOOKS
I am a huge fan of Interlibrary Loan and I use it a lot to extend my research into materials in the non-circulating collections of distant libraries and archives. However, I never forget that there are digitized local and family histories online, searchable, printable, and with other options. As I showed you in this scenario, I was easily able to locate and access two of the three books at the SoG that had been digitized, and this saves me another trip to England as well as using ILL. I also found several other books I had not known were part of the Ancestry.com Family and Local Histories collection. Boy, do I have more fodder for my research now!

Happy Hunting!
George

City's apology for drowned valley

BBC NEWS | Wales:

"BBC Wales can reveal that Liverpool council is close to making a formal apology for the drowning of a Welsh valley almost half a century ago.
Party leaders on the city council have agreed the wording of an apology to go before the council on 19 October.
Tryweryn, near Bala in Gwynedd, was flooded in 1965 to create the Tryweryn reservoir to supply water to Liverpool. "

When Liverpool Council announced its plans, they faced united opposition in Wales. Thirty-five of the 36 Welsh MPs voted against the plans and Tryweryn itself became the site of demonstrations and bombing attacks on construction equipment.

snipped
"The failure of the attempts to stop the plans led to a rapid growth in nationalism and calls for devolution and in the space of less than a year Plaid Cymru was transformed from a tiny pressure group into a major political party.

The resolution - to go before Liverpool's full council - will express remorse for the decision to flood the valley and for the insensitive way in which the matter was handled by the authorities.

It has come about a result of an intervention by the Liberal Democrat peer Lord Roberts of Llandudno who was saddened that Tryweryn was cited by many as a reason why the National Eisteddfod should not visit Liverpool.

The objective is for TDC to offer its customers TV, broadband, and telephony in one joint package irrespective of whether they are customers on the cable network or the telephony network.

It is the so-called IP technology that makes it possible to connect the traditional telecom network with the cable TV network. Thereby it becomes possible to deliver the same products on the two networks: It will be possible to make telephone calls over the cable TV network and to watch television over the telephone network. Ancestry World Tree, build your family tree using our pedigree files: "Search Instructions
Do not use commas between person or place names, and do not place periods after abbreviations. You can search on pieces of information, such as 'Nov' or '1848' or 'Cooper.'

To search the Ancestry World Tree, fill in one or more of the fields above and click 'Search.' Always fill in either the last name or the first name. The more fields you fill in the more accurate your results will be. If you do not get any results, delete the information from one field at a time until you do. Remember, other submitters may have slightly different dates or spellings of names for the same individual.

You will find all my data there, because if my computer fails, it makes a convenient back up and if I am at an archive I can refer to my own stuff very easily

Then I have GMAIL too which means I can write draft notes and save them for future access from any convenient computer.

Don't hesitate to ask me for a gmail invitation to have an account if you want one

Gmail is an experiment in a new kind of webmail, built on the idea that you should never have to delete mail

LIDL again

I have just been practicing my PhotoShop Elements skills correcting the nasty map of the location of the LIDL supermarket at Stationsalléen 5 - 7, 2730 Herlev (click to enlarge)

whilst I am really enjoying my first cups of the new (to me) Bremer Kaffee

Exploring Rootsweb: BLOG Indexed GEDCOM Method for Genweb Authoring

blogging my own blog is very bad taste
but this is an important area of web site design for genealogical sites,
and a valuable resource of free space for hundreds of thousands of sites and about five hundred million web pages.

afterwards click Home to see the whole of that blog

visit to LIDL in Herlev

When I got to Herlev Station I meseed up I turned left instead of right.
after wandering and asking - LIDL sounds like the danish word for "little" I arrived. nasty little map S tog station is not marked and the LIDL sign should be further south between the road and the railway on what was a goods yard

Looks good with a lot of cars at about 6:00pm

my old eyes love these signs above the goods (I don't need reading glasses and I stocked up on four kinds of fish and some chicken portions

this guy is the manager

oops I thought he was the managher

these bus signs are a disaster in lettering style and readable at about half the distance of the old roller blinds

I sat down and enjoyed the warmth on my bad knee and dozed for at least 20 minutes of the way this bus takes one hour door to door Herlev to Brumleby, Øster Alle, København which meant my 20 kg trolley including frozen fish and chicken, rye bread, 12 litres UHT milk, basmati rice, virgin olive oil and dijon mustard was very very eay to get home

I got my old favourite I get from LIDL in England CIEN kitchen rolls with briliant wet strengh,
and new to me BREMER Kaffee

I can also recommend the dark chocolate bar (70% cocoa solids) and the fine vinegar.
